چکیده

Correspo Abstract – Thisessay is anextendedandcritical review,of JohnHanks’bookOperationLockand thewaron rhino poaching, which is an insider account of hitherto untold stories of a secretive undercover operation to gather intelligence to counter the ongoing slaughter of Africa’s elephants and rhinos. Our critique employs the metaphor “ecologyofmind”, followingGregoryBateson, to highlight howsomuchconservation effortwith an espoused focus on improving natural ecologies fails at the level of “mind”, in particular the choices that are made to frame situations of concern. The outcome, we argue, is persistent framing failure. This failure, despite the efforts of Hanks with his authentic cry formore effective action, runs the risk of institutionalising systemic failure. Hanks consistently espouses support for local community as key stakeholders in the future of conservation but his book lacks evidence of investment, good practice examples and institutional and governance reformsneeded to create and sustain such initiatives. Indeed, the framingof the poaching challenge as a war presents barriers to finding systemic and sustainable solutions to the crisis.

Anthropogenic Influences on Conservation Values of White Rhinoceros

White rhinoceros (rhinos) is a keystone conservation species and also provides revenue for protection agencies. Restoring or mimicking the outcomes of impeded ecological processes allows reconciliation of biodiversity and financial objectives. We evaluate the consequences of white rhino management removal, and in recent times, poaching, on population persistence, regional conservation outcomes ...

Problematizing debates on wildlife conservation and the war on poaching.

The biannual Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) conference in Arusha is a science policy event where ideas about conservation science and practice in Tanzania and beyond are exchanged. At the 2015 conference, I learned through event ethnography (Brosius & Campbell 2010) how the paradigmatic crisis narrative of the so-called war on poaching shaped debates and created a sense of urgenc...

Disruption of Rhino Demography by Poachers May Lead to Population Declines in Kruger National Park, South Africa

The onslaught on the World's rhinoceroses continues despite numerous initiatives aimed at curbing it. When losses due to poaching exceed birth rates, declining rhino populations result. We used previously published estimates and growth rates for black rhinos (2008) and white rhinos (2010) together with known poaching trends at the time to predict population sizes and poaching rates in Kruger Na...

Can We Sustainably Harvest Ivory?

Despite the 1989 ivory trade ban, elephants continue to be killed to harvest their tusks for ivory. Since 2008, this poaching has increased to unprecedented levels driven by consumer demand for ivory products. CITES is now considering the development of a legal ivory trade [1, 2]. The proposal relies on three assumptions: (1) harvest regulation will cease all illegal activities, (2) defined sus...

The “Plan B” Integrated Rhino Poaching Strategy

Since 2007, rhino poaching has been occupying the time and resources of conservationists and Government in South Africa and abroad. What started as a low-level poaching concern soon ratcheted into what is now regarded as a complex crisis involving sophisticated and well funded global criminal syndicates. And as each subsequent year has reported ever higher losses at the hands of the poachers, t...
